Head Lice 101
About head lice
1 in about every 100 elementary students ages between 3 and 12 get lice. About 6 to million children get affected each year. There are three types of lice, head lice, pubic lice and body lice. The scalp, behind the ears, and at the back of the neck is where lice can be found. A nit is the size of a sesame seed. A sesame seed can be compared to the size of an adult louse. Usually, it can be the color of your child's hair, eggs, nits are usually smaller and silver in color.
Symptoms:

Common symptom is itching. Usually a reaction caused by the saliva left behind when the adult louse bites the scalp.

Nits (lice eggs) appear in the hair near the scalp. They appear in a variety of different colors. From translucent to brown and possibly off-white. Hard to remove.

At the base of the neck or behind the ears there are sores or broken skin. Caused by scratching of the lice bites.
In the event of an infestation:

Get examined to ensure lice are truly present. Family members may want to be examined as well.

Use a fine toothed comb to remove lice and nits from hair.

Notify your child’s school, day-care, family members and close friends.

Wash or change bed linens. Clean or throw away brushes and hair accessories. Vacuum furniture that has been in contact with the infested person.

Checking your child’s head regularly will decrease the infestation rate.

Using certain products as preventative shampoos, conditioners, or leave-in hair sprays may be very helpful. Contains tea tree oil, peppermint, and rosemary.
Camp, slumber parties

Advise girls to wear their hair in a ponytail or a braid when going to sleep.

Again, avoid sharing blankets, pillows, and mats.
Daycare, school

In sports, activities, and group work avoid head-to-head contact.

Hair accessories such as ponytail holders, hair clips. Hair brushes and combs. Do not share with other people.

Tell children to not play with each other’s hair.

Blankets, mats, and pillows should be avoided sharing as well.
